South Hobart beat Warriors 3-0 to claim Summer Series

6:00pm- FULL TIME. The Zebra youngsters claim the summer cup over a good Kingborough side, their goalkeeper Verdouw played a blinder. Certainly some future NPL stars on show today.

5:54pm- A Fraser cross hits the side netting. Zebras in control, but a little uneasy when not in posession.

5:48pm- Jasper Bush make a good run into the box for Lions, but Bighin gets back to block any shot.

5:44pm- a free kick for the Lions taken by Wakefield is fired straight at Reid in the Zebras goal.

5;41- Gorniak with another shot that is parried over the bar by the keeper Verdouw, who has been excellent today.

5:36pm- Gorniak with a shot on goal for Zebras – straight at the keeper  who keeps hold of it.

5:21pm – GOAL ZEBRAS – Fraser forgets his previous effort and slots home from close range within 2 minutes. Zebras 3 to the good.

5:19pm- A one-on-one effort by Fraser on Kingborough keeper Verdouw is smashed wide.

5:13pm- Downham fires a screamer – it hits the bar and bounces down and back out into play – but did it cross the line? The referee says no, but it was very VERY close. A great effort.

4:48pm – Half time. Zebras take a two goal lead into the second half, but the Lions still look dangerous and shouldnt be taken lightly.

4:55pm – a chance for Callum Ellis on the line is met by the Zebras keeper Reid and a defender, the ball going out for a corner.

4:53pm- a rocket fired at the post by Jake Pullen of Zebras – end to end stuff at the moment.

4:49pm- Hugo Tchong with a great shot, but hits the side netting. Despite the scoreline, Lions still causing Zebras some grief in defence.

4:44pm- GOAL ZEBRAS – Chase Clark makes space and fires a shot in under the keeper. Zebras take a two goal lead.

-4:32pm- GOAL ZEBRAS – After a fairly even first 20 minutes, the ball is passed into the box to Fraser, who placed it well.

4:16pm- An early chance for Zebras – a Brandon Fraser shot saved by the Boro keeper.

4:09pm- Kick off underway in the under 18’s Summer Cup Final!

Up next is the under 18’s Summer Cup final, where the Kingborough Lions and Hobart Zebras get their opportunity to claim the first silverware of the season for the youngsters.

3:56pm- FULL TIME. Metro gave the Knights a first half scare, but Knights always looked like they were going to turn on the pressure at their pace. Despite the free kick that gave Metro their second goal, the Knights made the second half their own. Metro 2-5 Glenorchy Knights.

3:42pm- GOAL METRO! Knights give away a free-kick that is passed into the centre and fired home. Completely against the run of play! That lifts Metro’s spirits!

3:37pm- A Sherman free-kick is curled wide.

3:31pm- GOAL KNIGHTS – another from Naden. Metro a shadow of the defence they were in the first half.

3:27pm- GOAL KNIGHTS. The floodgates are open with a finish from Nick Naden. Knights now enjoying themselves.

3:22pm- Penalty saved! Sherman chooses his bottom-left, but the keeper gets to it, with the ball bouncing over the bar. A lucky escape for Metro. It remains 3-1 Knights.

3:19pm- PENALTY: Sherman picks the top-right corner and fires home a rocket. Knights back in charge. Metro 1-3 Knights.

3:18pm- Penalty Knights

3:14pm- GOAL KNIGHTS! Ladic gives Knights the lead.

3:11pm- GOAL KNIGHTS! Callen Griffin shoots and hits the bar, only for the ball to rebound from a Metro player on the line. Vey unlucky for Metro, but the pressure Knights have put on them already this half was sure to break them down sooner or later.

3:05pm- Second half underway, an early chance from General Sherman goes wide.

2:53pm- HALF TIME. Metro 1 – 0 Knights. Metro holding on to their narrow lead, but the Knights were looking increasingly likely to score as the half went on.

2:45pm- Knights over the bar! Another opportunity for Kurdistan in the Knights attack- the best chance so far for an equaliser.

2:36- The Metro Bus is firmly parked, the frustration can be felt from the Knights on the field!

2:25pm- GOAL METRO! Against the run of play, Metro sneak one in with Knights asleep at the back.

2:22pm – 2 fabulous saves from the Metro keeper to deny Knights – but the 3rd try was skyed over the bar by Kurdistan.

2:14- Norwicki limps off injured, and will play no further part in the game.

2:12pm- Metro getting time on the ball early in this game, but Knights looking strong with Sherman, Warrener, Hallard and Norwicki all starting.

2:03pm- We’re underway here at KGV where Glenorchy Knights take on Metro in the Mens Summer Cup.

12:00pm- Sunday action about to get underway at KGV. Three games on the slate today, we start with Taroona and Nelson doing battle as Taroona look to lock up top spot, then it’s Knights taking on Metro before the Under 18 final between Kingborough and Hobart Zebras. Just the basic score updates from  the first game but we will have a full blog of the Knights v Metro game and the 18’s Cup final.

Sunday 11/3

Full Time: South Hobart 3-0 Olympia

9:34pm- GOAL! 3-0! Jake Brennan with an absolute rocket, picks out the far corner with a sumptuous strike.

9:21pm- GOAL! 2-0 South Hobart: Kemp plays in Gorrie who puts in a majestic cross to the back post for Schmidt who heads home.

Half Time: South Hobart 1-0 Olympia

South have been the better side through 45 minutes and had the better moments in attack. A great pace in this game and it has flowed nicely.

8:24pm- GOAL! 1-0 South Hobart! Morton storms in behind down the right and crosses for Degetto who places it home from close range.

8:13pm- Kick off, we are underway in the final game of the day.

7:55pm- Next up Olympia v South Hobart, tune into the live stream and don’t miss a minute of the action.

7:54pm- Full Time: Hobart Zebras 6-1 Kingborough Lions

Complete domination from the Zebras, even when they went down to 10 players they remained firmly in the ascendancy. They will head into the season in good spirits, whilst the Lions will need to regroup quickly.

7:45pm- GOAL! 6-1! Sanders gets his hat-trick but chalk that goal down to Dwayne Walsh, he was off on a barnstorming run down the left, burnt off two players and put in a perfect cross.

7:32pm- GOAL! 5-1! Sanders again, he was initially tripped up in the box but stayed on his feet, the advantage is paid and he curls home expertly.

Half Time: Hobart Zebras 4-0 Kingborough

The Zebras in complete control here at half time and the whistle must come as some relief to the Lions. They have been outclassed by the Zebras who are dominating and playing at a tremendous tempo.

7:1opm- GOAL! 4-1 Cowen’s penalty is saved brilliantly by Kamara diving to his right!! But Cowen follows up and pokes home the rebound.

7:09pm-Red Card!Robinson adjudged to have gotten into the back of a Lions attacker when he was in on goal, thus denying a scoring chance. The referee has decided he is not attempting to play the ball, therefore issues the red.

6:36pm- GOAL 4-0 Zebras! The Lions simply cannot cope with the speed and movement of Zebras and another lovely flowing move ends with Jayden Hey tapping in the simplest of finishes.

6:32pm- GOAL 3-0 Zebras! Well the Zebras are starting to get things together in time for the season, they add another on the half hour mark, Van Doorne with a perfect side footed finish into far corner after it fell to his feet in the box.

6:22pm- GOAL 2-0 Zebras! A howler from the keeper that, misjudges Walsh’s long range free kick floated into the box from halfway and he ends up being chipped.

6:20pm- Been a strong start from the Zebras, Sanders and Van Doorne have come close to adding to their lead and they are attacking well at speed. Van Doorne is absolute lightning, he is going to be a key counter attacking weapon for them.

6:10pm GOAL! 1-0 Zebras! A great diagonal ball from Burt springs Hey in behind, who shows good composure to draw out the keeper, then cut it back to Sanders at the top of the box who deposits it into the empty net.

6:02pm- Kick off! I’m looking forward to having a watch of the Zebras new centre back, Czech import Jan Charuza who looks a giant figure, towering over everyone else on the field. Huge wraps on him coming from the Zebras camp.

Just a reminder we have a Live Stream of the Olympia v South Hobart game to follow this one.

5:55pm- Next up we have Hobart Zebras and Kingborough Lions concluding their preseasons. One final run out before it all gets underway next weekend.

5:50pm- Full Time: Glenorchy Knights 4-0 Clarence The Knights ran out the game far stronger and really put the game to bed when Clarence wilted and they scored three goals in five minutes. Both sides were under strength, but Knights have once again highlighted the phenomenal depth they’ve acquired. They are going to be a force in 2018.

5:48pm- Frustrating couple of minutes for Jake Stuart, first firing a 1 v 1 straight at the keeper before being denied by the offside flag when he was through on goal for a second time.

5:34pm- GOAL! 3-0 Knights! and then GOAL! 4-0 Knights! It’s starting to unravel for Clarence now, Knights are running all over them and they add a third, then a fourth in the space of a minute. The latest a near mirror image of Engels previous effort, another lovely chip.

5:31pm- GOAL 2-0 Knights! No sooner had I finished typing that, Knights create a chance and take it! Delightful stuff from Engels, lofting a perfectly placed shot past the advancing Voss and into the far corner of the net.

5:30pm- No change in the score and no real chances to speak of in the last 15 minutes. Few players labouring out there now, this heat a real factor.

5:16pm- Ethan Engles tries an audacious chip and he caught it perfectly, but Voss was able to get back and keep it out. Has been good between the sticks so far has Voss.

5:06pm- GOAL! 1-0 Knights! Teddy Kadisha absolutely belts a header home from a corner. Was swung deep to the back post and was met with a clinical header!

5:03pm- Second half underway. Got to admire the Knights keenness, they were out there minutes before Clarence for the resumpion, but under the scorching sun, perhaps a questionable decision.

4:49pm- Half Time: Clarence 0-0 Glenorchy Knights

Nobody able to break the stalemate here so far, both teams came close. Clarence had one cleared off the line but it’s largely been a game bogged down in the midfield for the most part. Liking O’Neill’s game for Clarence, is organising things well at the back for them.

4:30pm- We reach the first half drinks break with the score still locked at 0-0. Knights have had the 2 best chances with Engels firing one narrowly wide of the far post moments earlier.

4:20pm- Voss makes a strong save, covering his angles well to deny Declan Brown after he waltzed past the defence and into the box. Pretty even opening 20, scorching conditions for this one.

4:04pm- Kick off between Knights and Clarence

3:55pm- Next up we swing to the Summer Series with Clarence having their final hit out before next weeks opening games up against Knights.

3:50pm Full Time: University 2-1 Hobart United So the Students hold on and will finish second in their group. Final group standings 8 points-Beachside, 7-University, 3-Hobart United, 0-New Town Eagles.

3:36pm GOAL! University 2-1 Hobart United That ought to do it! Thomas Roach with a booming header from the corner that flies top window and surely the Students are through to the Semi Finals now.

3:31pm- RED CARD! Well that might halt the charge, an awful tackle from Khasif of Hobart United and he is sent from the ground. Easy decision for Peart, right under his nose and had no hesitation pulling out the red. The second drinks break about to begin, so United have a chance to recompose themselves. 15 to play, If United win they are through, but it must be in regulation time, a win on penalties is not enough.

3:30pm- Hobart United are all over University at the moment, wave after wave of attacking moves but University are holding on!

3:18pm! GOAL! Hobart United 1-1 University! Balonja strokes home from close range and United draw level. The keeper initally made a goods save, the defence blocked a couple of shots but eventually the ball fell to Balonja and he made no mistake. This is headed for a grandstand finish! Raucous celebrations from the United players, but they still need 1 more.

3:10pm- PENALTY MISS! Riak steps up and slams his effort into the post! That could prove pivotal! So a bit over 30 minutes to play, United need 2 goals.

3:08pm- RED CARD! Kalminios has been given his marching orders for a poor challenge, denying a chance in the box and University are down to 10 men! Huge moment in the game this.

3:03pm- The second half has resumed at KGV.

2:48pm- Half Time University 1-0 Hobart United. Merry made a huge goal saving block in the moments leading up to the break and the Uni defence certainly came under pressure as the half wore on with United starting to wrestle back momentum. This one is definitely up for grabs, but United need 2 as a draw won’t be enough for them to make the semis, even a shoot out win won’t progress them as their goal difference is 3 behind.

2:30pm- A brief stoppage here as both sides are given the chance to have a quick drink and breather. The heat policy in effect today which is sensible given the mercury is pushing close to 30. The score remains 1-0 to University, they almost doubled their lead but Harris lost his footing just as he was about to go round the keeper. United have had their moments but are having some troubles staying onside at present.

The sun is shining at KGV

2:17pm- GOAL! University 1-0 Hobart United- But they get their goal anyway! Kenneth Trac curls one home all of a minute later and the Students are in the box seat to progress.

2:15pm- Some absolutely outstanding defence from David Nikimaya to deny Samuel Fahey. He made up tremendous ground storming back and then slid in to execute a perfect blog and deny what looked a certain goal.

2:02pm- Kick off between United and Beachside, a semi final spot on the line. Good to see FFT’s new Referee Manager Tony Peart out in the middle to officiate this one.

2:00pm- Expect the Noah Mies chant to be getting a fair workout at Buckby Park this evening. The youngster continued his dominant preseason by scoring 4 times for City in a 5-1 friendly win over Northern Rangers earlier this morning!

Last years rising star winner has dominated the preseason- Solstice Photography

1:55pm- Just about to get underway in game 2, University v Hobart United. The equation is this, if Hobart United win they finish second and progress, anything else and University will finish in second and go through.

1:46pm- Full Time: Beachside 2-0 New Town Eagles

So Beachside win and finish on top of group B, their ‘reward’ for that is likely to be a semi final against Knights! That is if results go as expected, either way it has been a good Summer Cup for Beachside so far and they continue that with a confident display against Eagles. The result of that one never really looked in doubt.

1:44pm- GOAL 2-0 Beachside! Brett Andrews converts a penalty with a minimal fuss, blasting a powerful drive into the bottom corner and securing the three points for his side. They will top group B.

1:23pm- Beachside are peppering the New Town goal at the moment but some fine goalkeeping and committed shot blocking from the defence has denied them the goal to extend their lead. Beachside remain firmly on top of the game though and it does seem only a matter of time before they break through again.

1:01pm- Second half is underway between Beachside and New Town.

12:45pm- Half Time Beachside 1-0 New Town Eagles. So if Beachside hold on to win then they are guaranteed to top the group. New Town can’t advance but will be keen to pick up their first point of the tournament.

12:40m- GOAL! 1-0 Beachside! The Big stork, Nick Cuthbertson wins a header in the box after a looping ball came down with snow on it. He lobs his header over the keeper and Beachside take the lead shortly before the break.

12:20pm- Pretty even first 20 minutes between the sides. Beachside came closest when Juma fired just wide but it has been a game of few chances so far.

12:00pm- Kick off between Beachside and New Town Eagles. Glorious day at KGV, the sun is shining and whilst it might be pretty tough playing in the afternoon slots, it’s perfect at the moment.

11:30am- Welcome to the Slice of Cheese match day blog, coming at you from KGV where I am just settling in for the next 10 hours of action. Forget your double headers, we have a quintuple header here today, starting with a pair of Summer Cup games before ending with 3 Summer Series hit outs. We will be live streaming the South Hobart v Olympia game to conclude things.

Those games for you are.

12:00pm: Beachside v New Town

2:00pm: Hobart United v University

It should be an interesting day of action as the Championship sides look to progress to the next round whilst the NPL sides have one last hit out before it all gets underway next weekend. In case you missed last nights action, it was Hobart Zebras 3-1 over South Hobart in the Women’s Summer Cup final.

A reminder of how things are looking at this stage of the Summer Cup.
