Clarence v Hobart Zebras

Live Blog Coverage From Andrew Cooling, From 6:30pm

 Shots On
 Shots Off

The Colonel shines as Zebras once again prove far too strong for Clarence. They pull out the brooms and sweep Clarence taking all 3 of their clashes in 2017.

90′ Shot on! Ackerly tries to catch out Voss who was furiously backtracking back on his line and is able to gather the ball to scramble backwards and keep it out.

87′ Shot off! A long ball from Groenewold is nodded into the path of Buga by Sanders who smashes an effort just over the crossbar.

85′ Shot block! Demar stretches out his left leg and makes a telling block to deny a goal bound drive from Walsh.

82′ Shot on! Voss! With a brilliant save, diving to his right to keep out a finessed shot from Gates.

79′ Shot off! Another powerful blast from Stuart from the left hand side of the box, this one lacks direction and he pulls it near side.

77′ In the wash up from the goal, Moynihan has been given a slice, not a clue what for.

76′ GOAL! 5-0! Huigsloot now gets in on the action, burying one from close range after the ball was played into the middle of the box.

75′ Shot off! Gates again, this time on the right foot after cutting inside sharply, shot didn’t match the quality of the build up.

73′ Shot on! Gates opts to try and curl one home from outside the box rather than feed Sanders and his shot is straight at Voss.

68′ Shot on! Moynihan, who had just snuck on tries to blast one past Mercuri from the angle but the keeper has his angles covered perfectly and makes a smart save.

67′ Slice of Cheese! Ugly challenge from Huigsloot scrapping in the centre circle earns a slice.

64′ GOAL! 4-0! Sanders steps up and completes his hat-trick with a perfectly struck penalty, but someone encroached, so a retake! It ends with the same result, just as sweetly struck. A hatty for the Colonel!

63′ PENALTY! Voss brings down Sanders in the box, got the ball initially but then cleaned up Sanders and body checked him, with the ball still in dispute, so seemed a clear penalty.

62′ GOAL! 3-0! Gates is played in, he surges into the left hand side of the box, eluding the lunging challenge of Demar and smashes it past the keeper and into the back of the net decisively!

60′ Shot off! Stuart again making things happen for Clarence. He charged past Warrener into the box then smashed it back across the face and put it inches wide, just took a leg break type of bounce when he needed the off spinner.

57′ Shot off! A storming counter attack from Kadisha, he charges the length of the field then squares it to Buga who plays it to Sanders whose shot is into the side netting.

54′ Stuart drives to the by-line and smashes a cross/shot back across that grazes the crossbar,.

49′ Slice of Cheese! Demar with some studs into Groenewold. Fair to say the big Chicago kid didn’t take too kindly to it. After a bit of a scuffle play resumes.

46′ Back underway, can the hosts fight back into this one?

Half Time: Clarence 0-2 Hobart Zebras

So Sanders 2-0 Clarence here at the moment, he has shown his class and been the difference but the chances came about from Zebras being firmly in control of general play.

45′ Gates storms down the left, charges into the box and his cross almost rolls in but Clarence have defenders back to clear.

40′ GOAL! 2-0! Sanders again! A clinical finish into the roof of the net from the angle. Got to feel for Voss there, he made 2 absolutely brilliant saves to deny Gates and Sanders in the lead up, but third time is the charm.

39′ Cleared off the line! A Gates cross is headed on net by Sanders but it doesn’t have enough on it to creep over and Lewis clears.

38′ Brilliant challenge from Voss, sticking a foot in to stop Kadisha having a prime chance after Groenewold headed one down into his path in the box.

37′ A nice piece of defending from O’Neill to shut down a near post chance for Sanders.

36′ A long bomb from Voss goes the length of the pitch, Mercuri jumps against Naden who is adjudged to have fouled him.

29′ Shot off! Stuart takes off and storms out of the middle before driving one just across the face, must have taken a touch before going wide as a corner is awarded. Quality play from Stuart that.

28′ Groenewold with a timely interception as he sweeps across and whacks it away from Burgess.

27′ “Stop giving it away in midfield, tidy it up” barks the ever talkative Gronewold. A fair diagnoses too. All Clarence’s best moments have come from turn overs so far.

26′ Voss does well to get a fist in ahead of the towering figure of Huigsloot from a long range Groenewold free kick,

26′ Slice of Cheese! Paul Palmer into the book for a late challenge.

23′ Demar again makes a brilliant challenge to prevent a Gates run into the box.

21′ A dangerous ball across the face is almost bundled home for Clarence, best attacking moment of the game for them, but its put behind for a corner.

17′ A full blooded sliding challenge from Demar is timed to perfection to deny Kadisha what looked a good chance in the box, perfect defending from the Jamaican.

16′ Jayden “Delap” Hey sends in another one which Huigsloot turns into a chance for Walsh, but he belts the ball into the stratosphere. Way over the top.

12′ GOAL! 1-0! Zebras! A ball into the box is scrapped for by Buga, it pops up and running onto it to smash a perfect volley top corner is the Colonel! Sublime finish!

11′ Very scrappy opening here, good tempo to the game but not much action of note so far. With Imran Lewis out, Hey is partnering Groenewold whilst Matthew Lewis is back tonight for Clarence and slotting in at left back.

7′ An almighty heave from Hey with the long throw into the box presents Groenewold with a chance and he wins the header but his effort is well wide.

2′ Early test at the back for Clarence with Walsh and Buga putting crosses in from both flanks. Buga had a chance to volley one home but barely shinned it and it skewed away at 45 degrees.

1′ We are underway at the Dune-geon, Cold and windy conditions, at Clarence’s back for this first half. This game will see the sides playing for the Luke Cripps shield, in honour of a much loved member of both sides.

On Saturday night at Wentworth Park ,Clarence host a Hobart Zebras side that has dominated their clashes this year. With 5-0 and 3-0 wins in the league and a 6-0 win in the Lakoseljac Cup they have been decidedly one sided match ups and Zebras will head into this one as comfortable favourites to continue that trend. Clarence showed some promising signs against South Hobart last week, though they conceded late in both half’s which is perhaps a nod the superior fitness of South Hobart. A win over Kingborough and a draw with Rangers the weeks prior suggest the Reds have turned a corner after their sobering trip to Devonport and redemption will be on the cards in this game having not gotten near Zebras in 2017. The need for a good showing here is accentuated by having slumped to the foot of the table. Sixth place still remains very much attainable though and that endeavour would be helped if they could take something from this contest. It won’t be easy, Zebras are coming off their best performance in months after beating Devonport 3-2 to help lock down fourth place. With Dwayne Walsh back in the fold and Adam Mckeown almost ready to return to action, the Zebras should be getting closer to resembling the side that was so impressive in the opening months of the season. Given that in their worst patch of form they have been in this year, Zebras still won their last meeting 3-0, Clarence will need to make their home ground advantage pay here and hope that Zebras are unable to perform on a cold, wet night at Wentworth Park.
