Clarence v University (WSL)

 Shots On
 Shots Off

Full Time: Clarence 2-2 University

A pretty even contest ends in a draw, both sides wait to claim that first win continues, but it’s a first point for the Reds. A good game of football that.

90+2′ Cropp with a free kick in a good spot, just outside the box on the right, Last chance for Uni. Hits it into the wall, corner ball.

89′ Newell makes a telling intervention to break up a promising counter attack.

84′ Shot on! A long range dipping effort from Young that pitches just before Vanderniet makes for an awkward save but she holds well.

79′ Save! A clutch stop from Lucas in the Uni net, Johnston had been played in 1 v 1, raced in on goal and drove it but the Uni keeper fingertips it over the top.

77′ Shot off! A free kick in a promising position is sent wide by Bowditch.

71′ GOAL! 2-2! Goss with a brace, this one not as pretty as the last but they all count the same, again from a corner, this one deflected a couple of times and was almost stopped on the line, but it’s in the back of the net.

67′ GOAL! 2-1! Uni reclaim the lead, a cross to the middle of the box, is well controlled and then smashed home, I think it was Norton but am not sure as she got mobbed the moment she scored and vanished in a sea of yellow so will need confirmation on that.

65′ Dixon shuts down a corner at the near post then charges off and carries it to halfway to relieve the danger. Clarence having the better of the second half and have had more of the play in their attacking half, though outside of the Goss goal.

SUB- George is replaced by Duncombe for the Students.

60′ Shot off! Cropp comes close, firing just past the post after a mazy run of considerable quality.

57′ SUB- Kearney has come on for Clarence, replacing Davie.

51′ Shot off! Olivia Young surges into the box and gets under her shot, lifting it over the bar.

49′ GOAL!!!! STUNNER, ABSOLUTE STUNNER FROM GOSS! Cracks a volley that nearly breaks a hole in the back of the net. A corner from Hall was headed back to the top of the box where Goss was lurking and she has absolutely buried it.

48′ Superb corner delivery from Hall, deflects off a defender and behind.

46′ Play resumes, Rain has stopped but chill factor is very much present.

So a gift of a goal to University via the penalty spot has them ahead and on balance of play probably fair enough, although having said that, for all their possession, Uni haven’t overly troubled the Reds. Still plenty to play for in the second half.

45′ Dixon wins a crucial 1 v 1 with Cropp. Uni have looked sharp on a couple of breaks but Dixon has been playing a sweeping role and cut out a number of promising moves as this half was worn on.

44′ Shot off! Another shy from down town, think it was Goss who tries but fires wide. The last 5 minuts has been the Reds best spell of the game.

38′ Save! Top drawer diving save to claw it out of the top window from Vandeniet. Cropp had taken the ball at the top of the box, turned sharply onto her left and fired a fine shot that seemed certain to score if not for the intervention from the Clarence keeper.

37′ Shot off! Goss, who has looked Clarence’s most lively player so far fires a long range curler than swings wide of the post.

33′ Shot off! Under pressure and on a bad angle George tries to fashion a shot, but it skews well wide.

29′ GOAL! 1-0 Cropp steps up and smashes home the spot kick.

29′ PENALTY! Mistakes from Zara Dixon are like hens teeth but she has made one here, handling the ball under no pressure in the box. The ball took a sharp bounce, so was a bit unlucky.

26′ Shot on! Long range free kick from Bowditch is easily caught by Vanderniet.

Absolutely pouring down with rain now, conditions truly awful. The Students shading the contest but haven’t looked like getting past the Clarence defence despite some good possesion.

18′ Shot on! George makes a powerful run through the middle but Dixon does well to apply pressure and affect the shot that rolls straight at Vanderniet.

12′ Shot on! Not enough power to trouble the keeper though as Roy rolls one along the ground from outside the box.

10′ Pretty open affair through the opening 10 minutes with the game flowing from end to end. But after the early chance to Norton nothing has happened in terms of scoring chances, defences doing well.

1′ Norton with the first chance of the game in the opening moments as she charges into the box but Vanderniet does well to make the save.

Welcome to Wentworth Park for the final game of the week as Clarence and University clash in what represents a prime chance for both sides to claim points. Given the seeming divide in the league this game is massive for both sides with a genuine chance for three points on offer for both teams as they meet for the first time this season. The reasons both sides are down the bottom end of the table differ. Clarence have struggled to put the ball in the back of the net, whilst conversely University have struggled to keep it out. So what will give in this one? Teams to follow
