FULL TIME HOBART ZEBRAS 7-1 ULVERSTONE

There it is, the final whistle and the Zebras claim a huge victory here today to reclaim top spot on the table. They were superb in that second half, Allie Berry simply stole the show and they ran riot over an Ulverstone side that started well but just couldn’t keep up with the Zebras, who register a massive win in Monique Undy’s 100th game. She gets the tunnel of players to walk through in a post game celebration, smiles all around for Zebras, as well there should be. What a performance that was!

90′ Shot off! Hardy skims the top of the crossbar with her free from just outside the box, nearly a consolation marker there for the visitors. They’ve not come close this half, having been under siege from the Zebras and forced deep in defence for most of the second 45.

85′ Nichols with a slick move to jink past Glover but her shot gets blocked.

84′ Crossbar! A short corner is worked to O’Brien who crosses onto the head of Berry whose powerful header is onto the woodwork! Then Spandler blasts the rebound over the top.

81′ Stoppage here as Boerma is lifted onto a stretcher, didn’t catch the incident but she looks in quite a bit of distress. Salt in the wounds for Ulverstone and hopefully it’s nothing long term.

They were tested early but Zebras are going to storm back to the summit with one of their best performances of the year. They have been clinical today, complete reverse of last week.

79′ GOAL! Allie Berry with the hat-trick. Again from a set piece, Burt swung in the corner and Berry absolutely belted her volley home. 7-1! Zebras have been irresistible in this second half!

Sub- Diprose replaced by Brooks for Ulverstone.

76′ GOAL! 6-1 Nichols again! All she does is score! This was well crafted by Berry, she turned on a dime, curled in a cross to the six yard box and Nichols was on hand to turn home the volley.

71′ GOAL! 5-1! Zoe Nichols! The Ulverstone defence lets a lofted ball from Berry bounce rather than head clear it, big mistake! The lurking Nichols swings her left leg at it and volleys it in off the cross bar.

67′ Shot off! O’Brien has been very impressive defensively but hasn’t had her radar for her long range shots today, another one flies wide from distance.

64′ That will be the end of her day though as she is replaced by Zoe Nichols.

63′ Shot on! Morris cuts inside and blasts one from the edge of the box that Hay parries in the air and catches. Not quite the end product there, but her corner delivery has been outstanding today, constantly hit with good pace right into dangerous areas.

62′ Shot off! A corner is scrambled clear to O’Brien who bends one from 30 yards that is over the bar.

This has been an entirely different Zebras side in the second half, they have brought a frenetic tenacity that wasn’t there in the first half and have Ulvie firmly on the back foot.

59′ GOAL! 4-! Berry again! Burt forged the chance with a perfect angled through ball to the penalty spot where an unmarked Berry controlled and fired straight at Hay, the rebound fell back to Berry who fired again, and this time she beats Hay, who got a good piece of it on the leg, but not enough.

55′ GOAL!! 3-1! Berry with a booming header! Sublime corner delivery from Morris, had plenty of pace on it, was truly silver service but Berry made tremendous contact with the header.

55′ That sub now made as Finch strides onto the pitch with a corner to defend.

55′ Play stops here as Gillard gets looked at, not sure what has gone on, but seems to be coughing quite a lot and she has headed to the bench, not subbed yet though, Ulvie down 10 for the time being.

47′ Shot off! Some nice play from Hardy at the top of the box directs it to Gillard who doesn’t quite make the contact she was after with a left footed volley.

46′ Play resuming here at KGV.

Half Time: Hobart Zebras 2-1 Ulverstone

So Zebras wrestled back control of the game as the half wore on after Ulverstone had seized both an equaliser and the ascendancy. The final 10 minutes was all Zebras and they came close to conjuring a third. Before that it was an Ulverstone side who were playing with a great physicality and purpose that seemed to have the momentum, before DK struck with her second to cap off a brilliant first 45 for the Zebras leading scorer.

45′ So close to a third! Kannegiesser with a perfect cross back across the face of goal that Morris can’t quite reach.

43′ Shot off! Morris tries to pick out the bottom right corner but is just wide of the marl

41′ Shot off! O’Brien has a shy from 30 yards from a free kick and it’s narrowly over the bar.

38′ Shot on! Cook comfortably collects a long range floating effort from Cox-Haines.

35′ Shot off! Mason has a pop from miles out but it floats wide of the post.

35′ Shot on! Harris with a tame effort from outside the box is no trouble for Hay.

That goal came against the run of play somewhat, Ulverstone had really dialled up the pressure but a well executed set piece has the Zebras back in front on the scoreboard, if not in general play.

33′ GOAL!!! 2-1! Kannegiesser with a clinical header. It was a perfect free kick from O’Brien, sublime delivery into the middle of the box where Kannegiesser rose high and finished with aplomb.

30′ Cross on! A dipping cross from Hardy on the right hand side of the box almost loops in but Cook gets across to claw it out of the corner.

29′ Shot off! Berry tries to curl one from just outside the box but it doesn’t bend enough.

27′ Superb run through the middle from Berry, skipped past 3 but her pass is broken up by Lucy Reimer who has started strongly.

25′ A dangerous cross from Kannegiesser is deflected into the path of Spandler but before she can get a boot to it, Hay punches behind for a corner.

23′ Twice in quick succesion Ulverstone have good attacking incursions, a teasing free kick was just dealt and whacked away by Undy before Cook has to be sharp off her line with Hardy almost played in in behind.

Ulverstone had just started to look dangerous and have some play in their attacking third and they profit immediately.  They are matching the Zebras here and taking it right up to them.

21′ GOAL! 1-1! A free kick is swung into a dangerous area in the box, it’s not dealt with and Cox-Haines bobs up and nods home from close range.

18′ A handball brings an end to a promising attack from Hardy, was in a duel with Mason and holding her off as she drove towards goal but the ball strikes the arm and it’s blown dead.

14′ Shot off! A misplaced clearance goes straight to Berry outside the area but her drive lacks direction.

9′ Got to say the purple away kit Ulverstone are wearing is very sharp, best away strip in the comp for mine. Thus far they haven’t created anything of note, though their talisman in the midfield Danielle Mitchell has threaded a nice couple of splitting through balls.

5′ A long searching ball over the top from Mason almost finds DK who beats the offside trap but Hay just gets there first and collects.

3′ GOAL! 1-0 Zebras! First shot first goal, and it’s Kannegieser who scores. Harris crossed from the right into the six yard box and despite it lacking pace, it’s not cleared and away and DK taps home from close range, bit of a soft one there.

1′ Kick off, underway at an overcast and somewhat murky KGV.

Welcome to KGV for this final game of Round 10 in the PFD Women’s Super League between Ulverstone and Hobart Zebras. It’s the first time these two sides will meet for the season and whilst Zebras will enter it expecting to continue their remarkable winning streak, it screams ‘danger game’ for the Stripey Horses. Ulverstone have shown in their recent losses against Olympia and Launceston City they are capable of hanging in there against the top teams of the competition and they can be a tough side to break down. If there is one knock on the Zebras this season, it’s that they have been rather wasteful in certain games. Their 5-1 win over the Lions should have been significantly more given the chances they produced and against an Ulverstone side who do a good job disrupting play and not giving up many prime goal scoring looks, that is something they cannot afford to be. No Phoebe Djakic in the line up for Ulverstone today though which is a massive blow.
