A Perfect 10 For Clarence Zebras

Tanner Coad

The Clarence Zebras have cruised to a resounding 10-2 victory over University on what was a frosty winter Sunday at KGV Park. Zoe Nichols led the way with her four goals whilst Caitlin Stalker also picked up a hat-trick inside of the first 20 minutes.

It was a fast start as Isabella Ferrier scored the opening goal three minutes into the game with a clinical finish inside the box which Uni’s keeper Rhiannon Steele was unable to keep out.

But University were able to score a shock equaliser only a minute after play resumed. Sophie Young sent in a low ball to Zoe Lovell who was able to get onto her right foot and finished past Zebra’s keeper Shelley Cook.

The game didn’t stay level for long as Stalker dribbled into the box and shot past Steele into the bottom left before she replicated her previous effort to produce the same result with another calmly placed goal into the back of the net just a minute later to make it 4-1.

The frenetic start continued when Danielle Kannegiesser sent in a fantastic through ball from the wing to Stacie Burdack who added onto the Zebras tally with a nice finish into the top right.

Stalker then completed her hat-trick inside of the first 20 minutes of game time in incredible style as she fired a long rang bomb from 30 yards out which sailed over Steele’s head.

A rattled University simply had no answers as Nichols opened her account for the day coming out the better in a one-on-one contest with the keeper. Nichols ever the opportunist was able to place it right down the middle and make it 6-1 after just 20 minutes of the match!

The scoring slowed for the rest of the half after the opening blitz, with the only additional goal coming when Selina Steventon got on the score sheet but not in the way she would of hoped. Steventon received a back pass and tried to clear the ball but managed to score an own goal as it landed over Cook’s head.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Zebras either, as just before half-time Burdack went down from a challenge with Steele. Burdack was carried off by Zebras staff members Adam Powell and Louisa Marmion and was replaced by the rotated co-captain Zara Dixon.

Isabella Ferrier and Sophie Young

Early in the second half, Nichols completed her brace after some great combination play with Stalker. Nichols found herself in the box alone from defence and finished hard past Steele.

Allie Berry was welcomed back into the Zebras squad for the game and when she was sent in a great ball from the right wing she made no mistake scoring to make it 8-2.

Berry then turned provider for Nichols when Nichols got onto a great delivery from Berry and was able to put her shot away with ease.

Nichols finished the day after getting onto a rebounded save that Steele was unable to clear away. Nichols with all the time in the world took just that and completed her fourth goal in style to take her season tally to 10 and secure the 10-2 victory.

The big win saw the Zebra’s improve their goal difference dramatically which now puts them only one goal off the leaders Olympia, though they still sit 2 points behind them.

Clarence Zebras will return to Wentworth Park for a fixture with South Hobart next week whilst University will now face the long road trip up to Ulverstone as they try get back on track.
