Chambers strike sends Warriors into cup final

Match report by Tanner Coad.

The Olympia Warriors have claimed a gritty 1-0 win over arch-rivals Clarence Zebras at Warrior Park, courtesy of a lone Madi Chambers goal.

From the get-go, both teams were more than happy to sit back and let the opposition work their way forward. Chambers and Mia Cane worked tirelessly on the flanks, but Taylor Rand and Selina Steventon stood firm for the Zebras.

Chambers opened the scoring before the break after displaying some great footwork. Darting past a Zebras defence that was looking strong, she hit her shot true into the bottom corner past veteran goalkeeper Shelley Cook to give the Warriors a 1-0 buffer.

Unfortunately the second-half was a lacklustre affair, with neither team earning a real edge. The Zebras piled on the pressure in the last 15 minutes but were unable to break the clean sheet from their former goalkeeper Kacee Ponting. Ponting secured victory for Olympia in the dying stages, pouncing on a pinballing effort in the box and holding tight.

That proved to be the final meaningful moment of the game, with Olympia securing their spot in the Statewide Cup final against Launceston United. They and the Zebras will face off for a second consecutive week in round nine of the MyState Women’s Super League.
