Rick Coghlan Named Strikers Coach

The Devonport Strikers have announced Englishmen, Rick Coghlan as their senior coach for the 2019 NPL TAS season. Coghlan will join from NPL Queensland’s Gold Coast United, where he most recently filled the role of Football Operations Manager and as the clubs Under 20’s head coach.

Born in London, Coghlan enjoyed a successful junior career before opting to move abroad where he has quickly ascended the coaching ranks and gained an FFA ‘A’ Licence qualification. He has previously been part of the Queensland State program competing at the FFA National Youth Championships and also worked for Central Coast Mariners FC, coaching within their A-League academy.

With former coach Chris Gallo departing to join the Mackay Magpies, the Strikers have moved quickly to fill the void and landed on the 29 year old as the ideal candidate to fill the role.

Coghlan told the Advocate Newspaper he was excited to take up the role and promised an attacking style of play.

I can’t wait to get started as I’ve heard nothing but good things about the culture of the club and I have been told I won’t really understand until I get there the real community aspect, but I can’t wait to find out.”

“I will definitely be looking to build an exciting brand of football at Devonport. My view on football is to absolutely just to go out there and win the game and give the people watching something to enjoy, as well as the players and the staff.”

Strikers President Rod Andrews said he believed Coghlan was the right man for the role and thanked Chris Gallo for his contribution over the past 2 seasons.

“Our NPL coach needs to be more than just someone who coaches the NPL team, but someone who is interested in growing the game and the club, and we think Rick can do that.”

“This is an exciting opportunity for Chris, Jess and Noah, and behalf of the Board I’d like to sincerely thank Chris for all that he has done for the club in what has been an incredible couple of years.”
