Full-time: South Hobart 1-1 Hobart Zebras

Late drama results in a share of the spoils here at Darcy Street. Both sides had the chances to go ahead throughout the game with Alex Walter possibly hoping he had done more with his couple of good chances. Nick Morton being brought down just outside the box potentially saved a definite goal for Zebras but they’ll be without Little for their next few games as a result. Devonport Strikers will be happy with the way the game ended as things are shaping up nicely in the early days of NPL Tas for 2019.

90’+5 Save! Desouza fires the free-kick on goal and Whatman produces a fine reaction save the point for Zebras.

90’+3 Red Card! Tommy Little is sent off after dragging down Nick Morton just inches outside of the 18-yard box. Morton was looking for it but the contact was there, he will be wishing he was half a step closer to goal as it would have been a penalty.

90′ +2 Slice of Cheese! Desouza sees a yellow card after breaking down a Zebras counter-attack deep in added time.

SUB – Pace off, McKeown on for Zebras.

87′ Chance! That’s a huge opportunity for Zebras to answer immediately as Sanders and Burt find themselves 2 on 1 in front of the South Hobart goal but Sanders’s squared ball is poor and Burt is left head in hands.

85′ Goal! 1-1 South Hobart. Following a corner and a flurry of deliveries into the box, the ball falls to Turner who sees his shot blocked and Desouza is there to tuck it home.

The changes made by both teams mean a lot of the promising, young players are now involved in the match. The pace has slowed down a bit as Zebras look to hold onto their 1-0 advantage.

80′ Gorrie again goes close, this time with a cross-come-shot that continues to rise over the bar. He looks to be the main threat for the home team at the moment.

78′ Gorrie takes a chance from 25-yards out and hits it very sweetly, however it’s straight into the hands of Whatman. It’s going to take something special from South to beat Zebras’ new goalkeeper, he’s been very solid at the back today.

72′ The Huigsloot substitution also looked to be injury related for Zebras as he went down after a hard challenge just minutes prior to the change.

SUB – Herweynan replaces Leszczynski for South Hobart and again it’s both teams making subs together as Ackerly replaces Huigsloot.

70′ Chance! Alex Walter has another chance to bring South level but he takes it too far and Whatman smothers it at his feet.

It’s a different story here in the second half as Zebras seem to be the side looking to add another goal to their tally. South Hobart are looking solid at the back though.

SUB- Berezansky replaces Phillipsen at the same time for South Hobart.

SUB – Muller is replaced by Burt for the Zebras. Muller pulled up short after a good-looking move along the left hand side and it looks to be a hamstring injury to the Zebras midfielder.

60′ It’s all Zebras here so far as Jayden Hey puts another effort over the crossbar, this time from a header after a teasing cross to the back post.

58′ Chance! Another attacking move starting with Edwards leads to him passing across the box to Hey who plays it one further to Pace. Pace gets the ball caught under his feet and his shot goes over the bar.

56′ Shot off target. Nicky Edwards, another top performer today for Zebras, shows a burst of pace to get away from his marker but sees his long distance effort float over the bar.

52′ It feels wrong to criticise Tommy Little today after his performance so far but he gets robbed of the ball and caught out of position as he attempts to charge into the midfield. Leszczynski attempts to make the most of it with a chipped ball through to Walter but it’s too heavy for the South Hobart youngster.

49′ Zebras looking lively in the early stages of the second half. Huigsloot attempts to feed Pace into the box but Brown gets there first, his clearance is straight into the Zebras attacker but he luckily sees it head out for a throw-in.

46′ Second half resumes

Half Time: South Hobart 0-1 Hobart Zebras.

Hobart Zebras have clearly come into this match happy to defend with the intention of scoring on the break and that’s exactly what’s happened for them so far. Perhaps a bit lucky that South Hobart haven’t been their usual clinical selves, the Zebras definitely won’t be opposed to defending their 1-0 lead in the second half. Alex Walter had 2 great chances to find the back of the net for South but despite Zebras only having 3 shots so far, they’ve been arguably the best chances of the game. I’m sure it’ll be more of the same for Zebras in the next 45 as South Hobart look to find their edge.

45′ +2 Slice Of Cheese! Adam Gorrie becomes the first player to have his name written in the book.

44′ An innocuous free kick into the box from Dillon sees South Hobart keeper Kieran Brown spill the ball onto the toes of Sanders but before Sanders has a chance to realise his luck, Brown swoops down and collects.

38′ Chance! Walter pounces on a sloppy pass out from the Zebras back-line and charges into the 18-yard box. His shot is blocked to the cries of handball from the South Hobart crowd but the replay proves it was off the leg of Tommy Little.

36′ Not for the first time Oscar Thomas sees himself in his attacking 18-yard box but his header is saved comfortably by Whatman. That brings up South Hobarts ninth shot of the game but only their second on target.

34′ Save! It was Hey vs Brown again in almost a carbon copy of the earlier goal. This time Brown gets some help from his defenders to push Hey wide and he makes a brilliant save on the resulting shot, again to the back post.

30′ Matthew Pace launches a ball onto the right flank to give Zebras a chance to finally get out of their defensive half. At one stage all eleven Zebras players were inside their own defensive third.

28′ Another South Hobart chance goes begging as Leszczynski turns his man and blazes a 20-yard effort onto the main road.

The game seems to have settled a bit here with both teams seeing their fair share of possession. An early flurry of action now finds both teams looking to find their rhythm.

19′ A foul from Riley Dillon sees South Hobart with a great chance for something here on the right side of the 18-yard box assuming Gorrie can deliver a good ball.

17′ Chance! Immediately following Edwards’ effort South Hobart break down the left and find Alex Walter through on goal however a delightful save from Whatman means we stay at 1-0.

16′ Chance! Nicky Edwards finds himself through on goal and looks to double Zebras lead but lacks conviction as he hits his effort straight at an advancing Brown.

South Hobart dominating the early stats here but they’re yet to have a convincing chance on goal aside from Walter’s early header.

13′ Chance! Walter plays a clever ball into Turner about 10 yards but he’s unable to get a good purchase on his shot as he hits a tame effort into Whatman’s hands.

10′ Goal! 1-0 Zebras. A quick ball over the top sees Jayden Hey one on one with Kieran Brown and he slots it calmly into the far post. Zebras making the most of a rare lapse in concentration from South Hobart.

9′ For the second time in about 2 minutes referee Brendan Kopra finds himself in the way of an attempted South Hobart through ball breaking down their attack.

5′ Chance! Alex Walter sees his 6-yard header touched onto the crossbar and over the goal by Whatman resulting in a corner.

3′ A floated cross from Yonezawa at right back gets the crowd excited as it looks to catch out Kieran Brown in the South Hobart goal but he collects comfortably.

1′ Kick Off

South Hobart see host to Hobart Zebras in today’s public holiday NPL action. Zebras are on cloud nine after a convincing victory in their season opener in contrast to South Hobart who have had two challenging games seeing them with a win and a loss to open their campaign. Regardless of when these two sides meet it can always be considered a 6-point game and this will be no different. Sanders sees himself atop the leading goalscorers after a 5-goal haul in the Round One clash against Clarence and he will undoubtedly be looking to increase his tally today, whereas for South Hobart they have three goals from three different scorers so far. It’s fair to say both teams will be desperate to get the points today as we await kick-off on a glorious day for football.
