Sherman & Carter Take Out Top Honours

James Sherman of Glenorchy Knights and Georgie Carter from South Hobart took out the top honours at the Veto Southern Awards Night held at the Grand Chancellor on Friday Night.

Knights midfielder James Sherman romped to the Vic Tuting Medal as he stormed past all rivals to win by a massive 10 votes. The Knights captain polled 29 votes to beat out his nearest rival, Brett Andrews of Beachside in second place. Takayuki Mizuno of Taroona came in third, ahead of Thomas Roach from University with Samuel Leszczynski of New Town Eagles rounding out the top five. But this was Sherman’s award, the Knights midfield general putting in a simply dominant season, bossing the midfield and playing a pivotal role in leading his side to their final day Championship victory. His teammate Ethan Engels claimed the Golden boot which Sherman had earlier accepted on his behalf.

In the Women’s Southern Championship it was South Hobart who claimed a clean sweep of the honours, with Georgie Carter taking out the Best and Fairest, Isabelle Ferrier the Golden Boot and Craig Westwood named the Women’s Southern coach of the year. Olympia had two players in the top five with Madison Chambers 3rd and Madoka Ishida in 5th, whilst Lisa Jarman from Kingborough Lions finished in 4th place.

There was more success in the Challenge League for Glenorchy Knights with Callum Brown winning the Best and Fairest Medal to go with his Golden Boot. The Knights attacker underlined why he is considered a rising star of the game by polling 21 votes to beat out South Hobart duo Pajari Sculthorpe and Jack Bowman. Corey Moore of Glenorchy Knights and Jacob Calvert from Olympia completed the top five.
