Somerset take out the 2021 Men’s Northern Championship after a 7-1 win against Launceston City in the final round.

The side won 16 out of their 21 matches for the season, improving vastly on their 2020 season efforts when they only won three matches.

Somerset looked to be early contenders for the title after they held the top ladder position since round four of the 2021 season.

The side was in a tight tussle with Devonport for most of the season with both sides proving they were strong teams from the outset.

Their first meeting was in round four and saw Somerset take a 2-1 victory. Devonport scooped up the points in their second encounter in round 13 with a 5-3 win. Round 17 was the last time the two sides met for the 2021 season and saw the match result in a draw with four goals apiece.

Somerset notched a 3-0 win in round 19 after they defeated Northern Rangers, whilst Devonport were 7-0 victors after they defeated Launceston City.

Somerset went down to Burnie United 3-2 in round 20, and Devonport closed the gap on the ladder to one point after a 2-0 win against Launceston United.

The final round saw both sides notch a win when Devonport defeated Ulverstone 6-1, but Somerset ultimately held their lead in the competition to take out the 2021 honours.

Henry Andrews was the competition’s leading scorer with 23 goals for Devonport and James Nettleton was a reliable scorer for Somerset scoring 18.
