Summer Cup: Week 2 Preview

The Summer Cup continues with Matchday 2 of the Women’s competition and Matchday 1 opening up proceedings for the Men’s Championship clubs.

Starting with the Women’s competition, where there is a Friday night double header at KGV. At 5:45pm, Clarence will take on Kingborough, with the Lions side looking to put themselves on the path to the Final with another 3 points. Having seen Ulverstone forfeit to them last week, a win here would leave them on maximum points and in the box seat to claim top spot in the group. Having lost 4-0 to Zebras on Matchday 1, Clarence will need to win this game and beat Ulverstone next week, whilst hoping Zebras slip up if they are to qualify for the final. Zebras will play Ulverstone on Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm in what should be a cracking game between the two most dominant sides of the past 2 seasons.

In Group B, the second part of the KGV double header will see Beachside and Taroona looking to bounce back. As the two championship sides, they are up against it in the group, but this game will offer each of them, their best chance at claiming points and a first win for season 2019. South Hobart and Olympia both set themselves on course to qualify for the final with big victories last week, and their Friday night clash at Warrior Park looms as a quasi Semi Final game. Hot off their heels of their 7-0 win over Beachside, Olympia will enter as favourites to advance, but South Hobart made big strides last season and have the player capable of securing the win that would have them with one foot in the Summer Cup Final.

On Saturday, the Men’s Summer Cup will get underway with three games at KGV, and one out Pembroke Park. In Group A, a huge first up showdown between Taroona and Beachside will kick things off at 10:00am as second meets fourth from last seasons Championship standings. They will be the two sides favoured to advance, but New Town Eagles will also fancy themselves and they get their chance to get off to a positive start when they take on Nelson at 12:30pm.

In Group B, University will be favoured to take the points in the final game of the day as they take on Metro at KGV. That game kicks off at 5:30pm and brings an end to what will be a massive day of football, with four games back to back.  Whilst down at Pembroke Park, it’s Championship newcomers South East United starting out at home against a Hobart United side who might just favourites to top the group after another season of steady improvement in 2018.
