Syson Steers Strikers Past Warriors

Daniel Syson has wasted no time making his mark upon his return to Valley Road, scoring the match winner to help the Devonport Strikers overcome the Olympia Warriors 1-0 in a tight battle. Syson smashed home the games lone goal on 55 minutes after being picked out in the box by Eddie Bidwell, and from there the Strikers held on to start their title defence with a win.

Devonport assumed control of the game in the first half, controlling the game with possession of the ball but it wasn’t translating into many chances, with the first half seeing very few good scoring opportunities. They moved the ball around nicely but couldn’t break through.

Olympia were trying their luck on the ball over the top for most of their attacks, building from the back and applying pressure through the one over the top, but the Strikers defence was able to deal with it

The solid defending from both sides saw them both scoreless at half time and needing an improvement in attack.

The Strikers were the ones who found it, as they conjured a brilliant end to end, team goal on 55 minutes.

A superb ball played from Joel Stone put Eddie Bidwell in behind down the left wing, Bidwell played a ball to Syson who composed himself, took a touch inside the box to lose the defender and slotted home in style! It made for a successful return home for Syson, following his stint with City in 2018.

Both teams started to lose their legs as the game wore on, it was a warm day that meant sore bodies. It was clear it would be a battle of determination and who could persevere as the game ticked into the final 20 minutes.

The Warriors created a few moments to cause some issues at the back, but couldn’t find the goal to get back level, as Devonport professionally saw out the game, and secured the 3 points.

It was a tough battle for both sides with not much difference between the two teams except for Syson, coolly slotting the ball past McDonald in the 55th minute. A good start to the campaign for the boys in blue and yellow, for Olympia it was a game they may feel they should have maybe snuck a point out of. Nevertheless, both teams will be happy with their performance and gear up for the next match day.
