In their top of the table battle, New Town eagles edged out Hobart United to claim a 1-0 win and remain undefeated atop the table, a goal to Sam Leszczynski the difference. In the battle of the two preseason promotion fancies, Glenorchy Knights made a big statement as they thumped Taroona 5-1. There were similarly lopsided results elsewhere as Beachside smashed Southern FC 6-0 to keep pace with the other title hopefuls whilst a Stuart Carnaby hat-trick saw University to a comfortable 5-2 win over Metro. The Eagles continue to lead the way in the early going but face a massive test this week when they take on second placed Knights who are likewise undefeated.

In windy conditions at Sandown Park Olympia dominated possession and the scoring against a gallant Beachside team who suffered their second loss for the week. Beachside were good in defence with Cicely Bennett deserving special mention with multiple saves in the windy conditions. Lucy Balmforth and her fellow defenders worked hard to continually deny Olympia’s new look forward line. But it wasn’t enough to stop Olympia scoring 10 goals which were shared around including: Innocent Michael 3,  Georgia Crawford 2, Heather Russell 2, Olivia Bomford 2. The win sees Olympia move 3 points clear on top of the table ahead of second placed South Hobart. Wayne Johnson

Women’s Northern Championship

The Southern Championship results had nothing on the North though, where Launceston United ran out 22-1 winners over Burnie to stay in second place. The rest of the games were far tighter, with the most important game of the week seeing Northern Rangers edging out a 4-3 win over Riverside to stay on top of the table, a perfect 5/5 on the season. They account for a clear top 3, with the rest of the pack some distance back already, with a four side logjam on 4 points and Burnie behind them on 3.
