The Clarence Zebras got their 2020 season off to a dominant start as they hammered University 8-0 at Wentworth Park on Sunday. The title favourites wasted little time flexing their muscle, as Zoe Nichols fired in a hat-trick in a showing that will put the rest of the league on notice. Having lead 2-0 at the break, the competition newbies proved far too strong and fired in six more second half strikes in a performance that underlined why they are the team to beat in 2020.

The Bees defence held sturdy in the first 25 minutes as they absorbed pressure and Rhiannon Steele was looking assured in net but Caitlin Stalker broke the deadlock on 28 minutes and as is often the case, one goal led to another quick one, as Zoe Nichols struck just minutes later to double the lead.

The Bees weren’t seeing a lot of the ball but they were buzzing about the pitch applying pressure and defending well, looking to spring counters and hit them quickly when they won the ball back. For the first 45 minutes that approach served them well, but eventually the players tired and the Zebras class began to shine through in the second 45.

Louisa Marmion made it 3-0 shortly after the restart before the flood gates opened just past the hour mark as Marmion made it a brace and Stacie Burdack chimed in with a quickfire brace of her own. The Zebras fired in 4 goals in the space of around 15 minutes to pull away and set up what would be a heavy victory.

Zoe Nichols then completed the rout as she completed her hat-trick just before full time to put a cherry on top of the cake for the Zebras who look every bit as dangerous as they were anticipated to be.
